Guest Post: Hair Removal – An Age Old Problem

Who Doesn’t Love a Freshly Shaved Soldier?
For several millennia at least, facial and body hair has been an obsession for men and women.  Men are bearded and women aren’t.  Or at least that’s the official line.  Facial hair for men is seen in many cultures as a sign of masculinity.  Up until the era of Alexander the Great a beard was standard issue for soldiers.  Alexander pointed out that beards could be easily grabbed by opposing soldiers, or at least that was the spin his PR people put out.  Possibly Alexander just preferred his young men clean shaven.  He was Greek, if you get what I mean.  On women, facial, and other unwanted body hair, has also been a sign of masculinity - which is not exactly the desired effect.

Social Problems
Despite thousands of years of cultural evolution, nothing much has changed.  Ultimately unwanted body hair is no laughing matter – whether you are female or male and it can have a devastating impact on both self-image and confidence.  For women, who socially are not expected to have hair anywhere but on the very top, it can be frustrating, time consuming and costly to remove the hair that is apparently unaware of these social conventions.  When it comes to unwanted facial or body hair, the only nod to the 21st century seems to be that problem is now a problem shared between men and women.  So what are the options and how is technology doing at solving this age old problem?

Old and New Tricks
  • Shaving is the oldest (most tedious) approach.  It’s been used by men and women throughout history to remove surplus hair.  It takes time, is uncomfortable, requires contortions that even the young can find challenging and often results in an unsightly rash replacing the unsightly hair.  Despite this it’s still a common way for women to deal with the most common problem area – the legs.  Top up treatments can be required frequently unless you’re a nun, and there’s no getting out of it with the designer “five o’clock shadow” trick that the boys came up with.
  • Waxing and Depilatory treatments.  These more modern solutions are effective, common and very popular.  Wax pleasantly rips the hair out by the root with only a reasonably large amount of pain – depending on the body part/s involved.  Depilatory creams are also popular.  These dissolve hair and like waxing offer a relatively low maintenance approach.  Waxing and depilatory creams remove hair for longer periods and only require top up treatments now and then.  The biggest downside is that they are not permanent solutions and can be time consuming to apply.   One upside is that they can be completed in the privacy of your own home and are cost effective.
  • You don’t have to be a sci-fi fan to love lasers.  Laser hair removal treatments have been around for nearly twenty years now.  Available traditionally through clinics and salons, laser hair removal is perhaps exactly what women have been looking for since social mores were invented.  Men can benefit from laser hair removal too – whether this is purely cosmetic or for embarrassing body hair.  Laser treatment targets the melanin (the dark pigment) in the hair and it’s the ideal treatment for those with mid or light skin tones, combined with dark hair colours.  The laser disables the growth cells in the follicle, this process prevents the hairs ability to grow back.

Bringing it Back Home
Most technological advances start off in the Space Industry.  They gradually filter to the commercial world, then down to the High Street and finally end up in our homes.  What exactly organisations like NASA wanted with laser hair removal products is uncertain – unless they like their soldiers smooth – but thankfully we are now reaching the stage where the Laser hair removal system is available for home use, whether you are male, female or flexible.  Home laser hair treatment is probably the most effective long term solution for permanent hair removal, offering the results achievable in the clinic in the privacy of your own home.

Prom Ready Must Haves!

It's that special time of year! Prom is finally here!

Don't know exactly what to bring to prom? I've got it all figured out for you.

Prom Clutch Must Haves:
Photobucket
1. Camera.
2. Phone.
3. Money.
4. ID
5. Blotting Sheets. Having an oily face is never a good look.. especially in pictures. Blot your face whenever you're looking shiny and they will soak up all that oil without ruining your makeup.
6. Lip gloss & 7. Eyeliner. Reapply when needed to always look picture perfect.
8. Travel Size Deodorant. You're going to get sweaty from dancing all night so bring this along in case you get a little funky. Trying to cover up your stank with perfume is never a good idea lol.
9. Roll-On Perfume/Sample. Bring along a mini perfume that you will be using on this special night. A sample would probably be better since it will take up less space.
10. Bobby Pins. Hair savers. If you see something looking a little off just pop these in wherever they're needed.
11. Safety Pins. You never know when there will be a prom dress malfunction.
12. Band-Aids. Just incase your shoes have done some damage to your feet.
13. Gum/Mints. Fresh breath is always a must.
14. Foldable/Roll Up Flats(not pictured). Slip these on when your feet start screaming for help. It's a whole lot better than walking around barefoot. If you can't seem to fit them in your clutch just have your date hold them for you. They're there for a reason! lol Check out these links:
15. And ofcourse don't forget a tampon or pad if needed!

Keep your money, i.d., and band-aids together by using your bobby pins. Then you won't have to go searching for them. =)

Some Prom Ready Makeup Must Haves:
Photobucket
Now remember, you're aiming for glam.. not trashy.
So if you're playing up the eyes, paint on a neutral lip. Going for bold lips? Apply neutral or light shades to your lids.
Aside from the obvious foundation, blush, eyeshadow, and gloss, there are a few other products you might want to think about.

1. A makeup setting spray. This will keep your face in place all night! If you set your makeup, the only beauty products you will need in your clutch are gloss, eyeliner, and blotting papers. You won't have to worry about anything else. My favorite: Model in a Bottle($10-20) Search on Amazon.com for a better price.
2.Lashes. Add a little oomph to your look with some lashes. If you're going to apply these you want to use DUO lash glue which you should bring along with you. You don't want anything too dramatic so keep an eye on the length and fullness. Demi Wispies are great!
3. Eyeshadow Primer. Eyeshadow primer is a necessity in the world of makeup. Just like the makeup setting spray locks in your face, eyeshadow primer does the same for your eyes.Apply this before you do your eye makeup for crease-proof, fade-proof eyeshadow. I love Urban Decay Primer Potion but if you're looking for something less expensive try e.l.f Eyeshadow Primer or L'Oreal De-crease.
4. Cream/Gel Eyeliner. These go on soo smoothly. Wet n Wild Creme liner is my absolute favorite eyeliner. It does not budge and stays the longest on my waterline.
5. Glitter. Who doesn't want to sparkle on prom night? Add some glitter to eyes. I love using NYX Candy Glitter Liners. You can either apply it to your lower lashline, tear duct, or right over your eyeliner.

Be safe and have fun! ♥

Neutrogena Pink Grapefruit Oil-Free Cleansing Wipes.

The Neutrogena Pink Grapefruit line is one of my favorites. It keeps my skin in check!

This year Neutrogena added a new product to the line.
 Photobucket

Pink Grapefruit Oil-Free Cleansing Wipes for Acne-Prone Skin

Photobucket

Price:
Around $6.99
Right now on sale @ CVS  $6.39

"These soft, pre-moistened wipes are great for on-the-go use, sweeping away pore clogging dirt and oil in one simple step-- leaving your face looking refreshed and smelling amazing!"
  • Convenient, pre-moistened wipes that thoroughly cleanse skin of pore-clogging impurities, without leaving behind a greasy residue so no need to rinse
  • Oil-free formula ideal for acne-prone skin
  • Uplifting blast of 100% naturally derived grapefruit extract + vitamin C

These wipes are perfect for when you're on the go.
I've been using them whenever I'm in a rush or when I'm feeling too tired and lazy to wash my face at night.
They don't dry out my skin and leave it feeling fresh.
Sadly, if you were expecting that same amazing grapefruit scent, you will not find it here.
Now don't get me wrong, it does smell like grapefruit but it's just not the same. It's mixed in with something else. I don't know what that something else is but I don't find it very appealing. =(

Have you tried these wipes?
What did you think of them?

Neutrogena Deep Clean Line.

Yes, another Neutrogena post.. but it's leading up to a great giveaway!
I know this post is pretty long and I was going to break it up but I just want to get on to the good stuff! lol

I got to try out some products from the Neutrogena Deep Clean Line.

I received:
Photobucket
  • Neutrogena Deep Clean Shine Control Daily Scrub
  • Neutrogena Deep Clean Shine Control Cleanser/Mask
  • Neutrogena Deep Clean Cream Cleanser
  • Neutrogena Deep Clean Gentle Scrub

Neutrogena Deep Clean Shine Control Daily Scrub

 Price:
Around $6.99
On sale right now at CVS for $6.39
  • Gentle exfoliating scrub combats oil and controls shine so skin is left looking and feeling smoother and healthier
  • Contains Rice Protein Technology to remove skin impurities and absorb oil on the surface of the skin.
      • Absorbs oil 10X faster than silica or clay.
      • Holds 2X as much oil as silica or clay, making it a superior oil absorber that grabs oil like a magnet
  • Clinically proven to instantly absorb 85% of built up oil and visibly control shine for up to eight hours

Neutrogena Deep Clean Shine Control Cleanser/Mask

Price:
Around  $6.99
On sale right now at CVS for $6.39
  • Rich 2-in-1 cleanser works to combat oil and control shine and can be used as a cleanser or, on those extra oily days, and intensive 3-minute mask
  • Contains the same Rice Protein Technology as the Daily Scrub
  • Clinically proven to visibly control shine for up to eight hours.

 My thoughts:
I tried the shine control products and that did not go so well.
I was really excited to test these out too. =(

Let me first say that they smell sooo good. Such a nice and clean scent.
I also love that the cleanser can be used as a mask
It didn't dry my face out at all and left it feeling so soft.
I feel like it did keep my face shine free a little bit longer than usual but definitely nowhere near 8 hours(maybe 1-3 hrs).
I only used this for about a week and noticed that my skin was looking no bueno and bumpy. I know it had to be the shine control products because if I skipped a day the bumps would disappear.
So I dropped that from my daily routine.

*I just want to remind you that although a product works or doesn't work for me does not guarantee it will work the same for you. So just because this product gave me bad skin for about a week doesn't mean that you won't think it's amazing.

Neutrogena Deep Clean Cream Cleanser($6.39 @CVS) and Gentle Scrub ($5.03 @ CVS)
  • Cleansers that clean so deep down into pores they even remove blackhead-causing dirt and oil for the deepest feeling clean.
  • Effective formula cleans deep down into the pores, dissolving dirt, oil, and makeup.
  • Contains a beta hydroxy acid which washes away dead surface skin cells that can dull the complexion.
  • Contains menthol for a refreshing, cooling feeling
  • Leaves skin with a deep-feeling clean
  • Improves complexion by leaving skin cleaner, softer, smoother and healthier-looking
  • No pore-clogging residue
  • Oil free
  • Dermatologist tested
  • Non-comedogenic

As for these Deep Clean products, I haven't tried them so I can't give you my opinion.
My sister used them and she liked them. She has sensitive skin so many products don't agree with her.
They didn't dry out her skin and left it feeling clean and soft.
They have a nice, clean scent although I think the shine control products smell a whole lot better.

I also got Neutrogena Deep Clean Shine Control Blotting Sheets.
Photobucket
  •  Silky, ultra-absorbent sheets instantly remove excess surface oil that may clog pores, without over-drying skin or disturbing makeup
  • Fragrance- Free
  • Safe to use as often as needed
  • Clinically proven to leave skin shine free for up to four house and reduce shine by 95%

Price:
Around $5.99 for 50 sheets

I love blotting sheets. I've been keeping these with me at all times.
It doesn't leave my skin shine free for up to four hours like they say.
To me they seem like any other blotting papers I've tried. I don't really see a difference.

Photobucket
There is a piece of double sided tape on the inside of the flap so that when u open it, it pulls a sheet right out for you.

Have you tried any of these products?
What did you think of them?

Review: Neutrogena Makeup Removers.

Let me introduce you to my new friends. =)

Photobucket
Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover and Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes

 Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover
Photobucket
"Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover takes off even waterproof eye makeup without leaving an oily residue. Forget harsh tugging and pulling. This ultra-gentle dual phase formula activates when shaken to remove all eye makeup--even waterproof mascara--without any greasy residue. It is ophthalmologist tested, safe for contact lens wearers and oil free.
Take off all your eye makeup the gentle way."
  • Dual-action formula removes even waterproof makeup
  • Oil-free, non-greasy
  • Ophthalmologist tested
  • Safe for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers

Price:
Around $6.99
On sale right now at CVS for $5.99
Available in 3.8 oz and 5.5 oz.

My Thoughts:
This product is amazing! It removes my eye makeup effortlessly.
I apply some onto a cotton pad and wipe it all away.

Even though Neutrogena says it's oil free it still leaves your lids feeling greasy.
I personally don't mind this at all since I always wash my face after I  remove my eye makeup.
I'm not too fond of the smell but if it works it works lol.

This reminds me so much of Clinique's Take The Day Off makeup remover(love this!). They don't have all the same ingredients but they look, feel, and work exactly the same.
What Neutrogena's missing is a safety cap. This would make it a lot less messy to travel with.
The biggest(and best) difference is the price.
Cliniques makeup remover will cost you $18(4.2 oz) while Neutrogenas eye makeup remover is on sale right now at CVS for $5.99(5.5 oz) . Less than half the price and you're getting more product!
It works exactly like the high end stuff and will keep a little extra money in your pocket.
Clinique, I'm sorry but I think you have been replaced.

 Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes
 Photobucket
"Taking off makeup everyday can be a hassle. Many removers do not fully remove product, leaving traces of makeup that can cause clogged pores and breakouts. But with just one towelette, Neutrogena Makeup Removing Cleansing Towelettes remove 99.3% of all traces of dirt, oil, and makeup to reveal clean, fresh skin. It takes two competitor wipes to do what one Neutrogena wipe can. These gentle, ultra soft cloths contain superior cleansing technology so effective that it removes even waterproof mascara. Quick and easy to use, these wipes thoroughly cleanse skin with no heavy residue, so there's no need to rinse!"
  •  Ultra soft cloths gently and quickly dissolve all traces of makeup, leaving skin thoroughly clean, without heavy residue
  • Removes makeup with just one easy step
  • Gentle enough to use around the delicate eye area
  • Safe for contact lens wearers
 Price:
Around $8.99 for 25 towelettes with Vanity Case
Around $6.49 for 25 refills
On sale right now at CVS for $5.99

My Thoughts:
These makeup remover wipes are a must have!
After a long night of partying, the last thing I want to think about is taking all that makeup off. These make everything sooo much easier. I usually use baby wipes on nights like these and it's such a pain to try and remove every last trace of makeup. These Neutrogena wipes remove everything! It all comes off so easily without any tugging or pulling.

Photobucket
This is nothing compared to my completely done up face lol.

I love that you don't have to rinse your face after using them.
They smell good and left my face feeling nice and clean.
You may need more than 1 wipe(definitely no more than 2) depending on how much makeup you have caked on.

Have you tried these products?
What's your favorite makeup remover?

Kiss Nail Dress Review.

Fashion that sticks!

If you don't have time to do your nails, don't have a steady hand for creating designs, or maybe just feeling too lazy to do them... then keep on reading!

These Kiss Nail Dress strips came in the Influenster Love VoxBox which I mentioned in an earlier post.

The style I received was "Sexy".
Photobucket

What are they?
Stickers for your nails(and toes) that you can use instead of applying nail polish.
Stick these on and you're good to go.
It comes with 28 strips in 14 different sizes, a design booklet, and a file.

There are 18 different styles.
Photobucket
Cuuute! =)

Price: $7.99 @ Walgreens right now
How to apply:
  1. Select size that fits your nail.
  2. Apply near, not on cuticle & smooth away from center.
  3. Fold down over edge & file excess.

Photobucket
Sorry, I know you're probably sick of seeing pink nails by now lol.

Kiss says these strips last up to 10 days depending on your lifestyle.
I only used 1 on each hand because I wasn't sure how long it would last on my nails.
It's been 6 days and they're starting to peel a bit at the tips. I might be able to get away with it for another day.
So for me this lasts about a week and I am not complaining about that. Pretty great for some stickers I must say!

These are very easy to apply.
There is no drying time and you don't need a top coat.
To remove just peel off from the sides.
Other nail strips dry out over time once they're opened but since these are stickers you won't have to worry about that.

 The 1 problem I had...
Photobucket
Some bunching up on the sides. I couldn't get it to be completely smooth.
Not very attractive but it's only noticeable if you're looking up close.
Oh and make sure you smooth out the tips as much as possible so they don't get caught on anything.

You can also cut up any leftover strips to create designs like these...
Photobucket
Directions say to apply onto a clean nail or over Kiss Impress Nails so I don't know how well these work over nail polish.
I haven't gotten a chance to try it yet but I'm hoping it stays on because I am not buying no press-on nails just to do this lol.

Would I buy this product?
Yes!
There are a few styles that I need to go buy. They are just too cute to pass up.

Have you tried Kiss Nail Dress?
What do you think about them?

Disclaimer: Products mentioned in this post were received complimentary through the Influenster VoxBox program.

A little more dramatic than the other.
